Overview

In Nepal, there are some small peaks below 6,500 meters that can be combined with an organized trekking tour. These peaks lie close to popular and accessible trekking routes in Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang region and some amazing climbs of a maximum of 3-4 days can easily be incorporated into any of the wonderful treks in these regions.

Climbing these small peaks is only possible through government-registered trekking companies locally based in Nepal. Trekking peaks vary from moderate walks to technical, multi-day mixed rock and ice climb depending on the peaks from region to region. Some peaks are challenging and involved mountaineering technicality. So, one should find such a peak that matches his skill level and experience. Mera Peak, Island Peak, and the Chulu Peaks are some extremely challenging peaks and Phari Lapcha or Cholatse lure the world’s very best climbers. With proper planning and preparation, one can outfit himself and attempt the climbs in a truly extraordinary way.

‘Trekking Peaks’ was first named by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) in 1978. Eighteen new peaks were opened for alpine climbing for foreign climbers by issuing a climbing permit under the rules & regulations formulated by this organization. In total there are 18 trekking peaks out of which 7 are in the Everest region, 4 in the Annapurna region, and the rest in the Langtang, Manang, and Rolwaling regions respectively. In 2002 the list of existing trekking peaks was added and split into NMA-A and NMA-B lists making 33 peaks offering each more exciting mountaineering possibilities for those wanting to experience climbing in Nepal Himalaya on a short holiday in Nepal.

Along with the climbing permits, a climbing guide should be hired from a government-registered trekking company. The guide should have a climbing permit from Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and be professional. Technically speaking, trekking peaks differ from expedition peaks in terms of elevation and costs involved.
